Buying a Used Car

Before you start shopping for a used car, do some homework. It may save you serious money. Consider your driving habits, what the car will be used for, and your budget. Research models, options, costs, repair records, safety tests, and mileage — online and through libraries and bookstores.

    Recalls - What to Know

For many consumers, the word "recall" dredges up feelings of fear and anxiety. It may help if you try to think of a recall as an extension of the manufacturer's continued commitment to the consumer's safety—even years after the warranty period has expired. In most cases a recall of your car does not mean that it is destined to breakdown, but rather that a problem in the manufacturing process has been identified in a number of similar models and therefore has the potential to surface in yours. Usually, the manufacturer has engineered a fix and the dealer can install the new part or parts at no cost to you. Some recalls are prompted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration while others are completely voluntary on the part of the manufacturer.

    Understanding Car Add-ons

When you buy a car, the dealer also might try to sell you optional products or services known as “add-ons”— which might break your budget. Here’s what you need to know.

    Saving Money on Gas

Whether driving cross-town or cross-country, everybody wants to save money at the pump. Regardless of the make and model, your car's estimated gas mileage is just that — an estimate. An important variable is how you fuel, drive, and maintain your car. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, offers these bumper-to-bumper tips to help you get the most mileage out of your gas purchases:

    Best Color to Buy

In the world of automotive car colors, the chicken and the egg arrive simultaneously. In other words, vehicle colors that consumers demand heavily influence which colors the manufacturers create. So why do we demand the colors we do?
There are people in the car color business who spend a great deal of time trying to predict this phenomenon and they have many theories. One such person is Robert S. Daily, color-marketing manager of DuPont Automotive, a major paint supplier to the automotive industry. For example, he believes it's our affinity for technology that lures us to silver. He writes, "Silver and gray reflect our fascination with technology, such as seen in the brushed chrome cues on laptop computer covers and other electronic devices. Secondly, silver and techno-gray seem to accentuate the angular, 'new-edge design' of the latest luxury sport vehicles." Others believe that silver relates to "feelings of superiority" and "great mental powers."

Looking for a new set of wheels? Here’s our guide on how to finance a car

Thinking about getting a sweet new ride lately? You aren’t alone. The automobile industry in America had its biggest sales year in history during 2016, delivering around 17.55 million new cars and trucks. The previous high water mark was set back in 2007, just before the bottom fell out of the housing market and took the rest of the economy with it. After slumping along for years, the industry is back and sales are positively booming.

Some of the reasons for the boom are pretty easy to identify, like a recovering economy, low gas prices, and a whole lot of pent-up demand as people finally replace the old cars they’ve been nursing through the recession. But the biggest hidden factor? Confidence. People who are pretty sure that they will have a job going forward are willing to take on some debt to get a new car.

    2013 KIA SORENTO

Check out our website for our featured vehicle, a 2013 KIA SORENTO! Comes with 2.4L engine, and 81,421 miles. Inside, the 2013 Kia Sorento features a handsome cabin made with good-quality materials. The base model seats five. Upper trims have a third row that increases seating capacity to seven. There are complete sets of LATCH child-seat connectors located in the second-row outboard seats, and one upper tether anchor in the second-row middle seat. The front seats offer comfort and a high seating position that provides excellent forward sightlines. The second row doesn’t offer enough space to comfortably fit three passengers, but the available third row has decent space for two.

The repair bills on your current car are bleeding you!

Repair bills for cars are inevitable, even on late model vehicles. But as cars age, they require more frequent and more expensive repairs. It’s hard to know when to buy a new car because so much is dependent on individual circumstances.

You might adopt a rule of thumb. For example, let’s say that you project that a new car will require a $400 monthly payment. 12 months of payments are equal to $4,800 per year. You can use that as a barometer of annual repair expenses on your current car.

If you have, say, three repairs on your car during the year at a total cost of $1,500, you might decide that—based on the car payment barometer—it’s worth keeping your old car. If, on the other hand, you have five repairs at a cost of $3,500, you might decide that it’s close enough to the cost of the payments on a new car to make buying a new car worth it.

But there are other situations where the type of repairs might also be a factor.

For example, let’s say that your 10-year-old car needs a new transmission, at a cost of $2,500. That’s a big cost, but it also will replace a major component in your car. By doing so, you may decide that the car has a “new lease on life,” and decide to keep it a few years longer.

In addition, when you make that kind of new investment in your old car, you might want to recover some of the cost by keeping the car longer. This will be especially true if the car is reliable, and doesn’t require ongoing repairs.

Still another repair-related factor is your own ability. If you are adept at repairing cars, holding onto an older car longer will be less expensive to do. On the other hand, if you know nothing about auto mechanics, and must go to a repair shop for all repairs, the cost is can be much higher.

    KBB Editor's Overview

    By KBB.com Editorial Staff
Now in its second generation, today's Jeep Liberty – despite modest enhancements for 2011 – isn't feeling the love from its design team at Jeep. As the successor to the now-iconic Cherokee (with heads bowed, we pause to reflect the good times we had...) both first and second generations of the Liberty may seemingly offer more luxury and refinement, but the Jeep fan base notices little beyond their expanded mass. Compounding the weight gain is virtually no ground clearance, and to fit true off-road-rated rubber you absolutely must lift the vehicle. The above "good" news is marginalized even further by the 3.7-liter V6 retained by the Liberty's product team, when every other RWD Jeep has been graced with the company's vastly better 3.6-liter six. An all-new Liberty replacement is reportedly due within the next two model years – and we can't wait.

    You'll Like This SUV If...

If you enjoy the Jeep brand but regard a Grand Cherokee as too much of a financial stretch, and the down-market Patriot and Compass seem more trial than trail, the Liberty might be your cup of green tea. And both trail-rated 4WD systems – Command-Trac II and Selec-Trac II – provide a leg-up on the Jeep Liberty's car-based competition. That said, we'd caution against overspending; as you get closer to $30K a Grand Cherokee is much more compelling in both its utility and sport.

Just want to say Thank You!

To all of our loyal customers we greatly appreciate your continued support!

"The 2013 Fusion marks the second generation of Ford's mid-size family sedan. What was a good-looking car to begin with has become a dazzling one now with fresh sheet metal and slightly larger dimensions. At first glance, you might think it's an Aston Martin. Under its sleek hood, Ford has replaced the past V6 engine options with a choice of two small-but-powerful and fuel-efficient turbocharged 4-cylinder powerplants. Those seeking the greatest fuel-economy will be drawn to the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi, a plug-in hybrid. What’s In A VIN?

    Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs)

Ever wonder what that long group of numbers and letters identifying your car means? There is some method to the madness. While the various bumper stickers on the back of your car tell people who you are, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) tells the world who your car is.
Mechanics use the VIN to identify engine type and other parts to service a vehicle, law enforcement can use the VIN to identify stolen vehicles, and manufacturers use it to resolve safety recalls.

    Where’s My VIN?

You’ve probably had to find the VIN on your vehicle at some point. Because the VIN unlocks information about your car, you’ll see it on car titles, insurance policies and auto service records.
The location on the car will vary by year and manufacturer, but you’ll usually find it on the dashboard (you’ll be able to see it through the front windshield), on a sticker inside the driver’s side door or on the engine block.

    Cracking The Da-VIN-ci Code

Under standards set by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA), every car and truck model year 1981 or later has a unique 17-digit VIN. Here is how the VIN is assigned.
    • World Manufacturer Identifier – The first three digits of the VIN tell you the country of original (or final point of) assembly, manufacturer and vehicle type or division. For example, 1GC would represent an American-made General Motors vehicle branded as a Chevrolet.
    • Vehicle Descriptor Section – The next five digits are used by service shops to determine the vehicle model, body, engine type, and more. The ninth digit is known as the “Check Digit,” is based on a mathematical formula to identity invalid VINs.
    • Vehicle Identifier Section – The 10th digit represents the vehicle’s model year, but is represented by a letter or number. For example, 2010 is an “A.”
The remaining digits make up the assembly plant and production number, which can be used differently by each manufacturer.

How To Safely Handle A Tire Blowout

flat tire It’s one of the most unexpected—and unnerving—driving experiences: a tire blowout. And something as small as a nail in the road can be the cause.
“It happens any time the air in the tire escapes at a rapid speed,” says James Solomon, a defensive driving expert with the National Safety Council (NSC). According to the NSC, the top five causes of tire blowouts are under-inflation, overload, uneven tread wear, damage and defects.
Fortunately, tire blowouts seem to be on the downswing since the implementation of tire pressure monitoring systems, says Solomon. Still, he cautions, the unexpected event could occur, so it’s important for drivers to understand the possible causes and the proper responses, as well as the steps to take to help prevent a tire blowout.

    What To Do

“A blowout is pretty obvious,” says Solomon. “You’ll hear a pop, and one side of your car will drop down.” If it’s a front tire, you’ll hear a flapping sound, and the steering wheel could jerk from your hands. A back tire may be less dramatic, but both situations should be handled the same.
“The last thing you want to do is jam on the brakes, especially in traffic,” says Solomon, even though that may be your gut reaction. The goal is to gain control of the vehicle as it continues to move and to get it away from traffic. He recommends signaling for a lane change and easing your foot off the gas pedal while steering to the side of the road as quickly and as smoothly as you can.
